Egypt has a very sunny climate about 12 hours of sunshine a day in summer and 8 - 10 hours of sunshine a day in winter. Luxor and Aswan have an almost perfect winter climate: dry, sunny, and not unpleasantly hot.

This all-year sunshine and warmth makes Luxor the perfect holiday destination for sun-seekers! Temperature is usually recorded in the shade - but that's unhelpful in Egypt, where it can be hard to find any shade - and if you're in the desert there's none at all! Fortunately it's a dry heat, so even in summer the heat doesn't sap your energy too much. But you must drink enough water the keep yourself safely hydrated! Sun-screen, sunhat and sunglasses (to combat glare from water, desert sand and pale stone) are also recommended

Efficient air-conditioning in your holiday accommodation will keep you comfortable summer and winter - whatever the weather.

Summer (May - September) averages 32°C. In high summer (June - August) temperatures may exceed 40°C. In spring and winter temperatures remain in the high twenties and thirties. (Scroll down for details)

If you like to do serious walking or mountain biking - or if you simply prefer 'cool' - you should aim for November - April (January daytime temperatures are usually 17°C minimum). Some evenings are cool during spring, autumn and winter.

However, during the 'cool season' a hot khamsin wind sometimes blows in from the Western Desert (usually in April) and may bring a sandstorm with it. It may last for two uncomfortable days. The khamsin can heat the air 20°C in just 2 hours, and sometimes reachs 93mph!

Sometimes, mainly in winter there can be a little morning mist and fog, but it quickly clears as the sun ascends. It's a side-effect of the intense irrigation used by local farmers - as well as creating a verdant landscape it can raise the humidity just enough for beautiful atmospheric effects. At harvest time, stunning atmospheric effects are helped along by the dust of threshing.
